Alpine Surf 2011

Alpine Surf Trip Blog

After having our first Alpine Surf trip (of many to come), we thought we would let you know how the week of sun, surf, banter and bull running went!

As we pulled up after a 24 hour long coach journey (full of Ski Alpine entertainment and banter), we got out of our luxury air conditioned coach into the heat of Zarautz, Spain. Once we were allocated our tents, we made our way to the beach and dived into a surprisingly warm sea! After chilling out on the beach for an hour or so, we went back to the campsite for pizza, got changed and made our way into town to experience its nightlife, which then led most of us to end up in the children’s playground at the end of the night :S

The rest of the week we mainly spent on the beach, surfing, playing volleyball and strolling round Zarautz’s quaint town centre. The staff at the campsite were great at organising evening activities which included a beach bonfire, movie night (with a very random choice of movie!) and karaoke. On the beach bonfire night, the campsite brought down barrels of punch so we had free unlimited alcohol all night – definitely cannot complain about that! We also brought everyone Chinese lanterns down to the beach, where we let them off on the shore. Very romantic moments as you can imagine!

Surf conditions were very good all week, with the last few days being exceptional. Laura and Katie took surf lessons, and entered into a surf competition at the end of the week. Both took to surfing amazingly, and next year I would really recommend lessons to anyone wanting to learn or improve. We had a very mixed bunch of surfers, from complete beginners to real keeno’s, and everyone seemed to really enjoy it, even though Charlie had a tantrum because he found it hard - bless!

A few of us went to San Sebastian on Wednesday which was really easy to get to on the train. It only cost €2.50 return and took 25 minutes. San Sebastian has some great architecture and lively nightlife. Chris Bailey and Juan certainly made the most of San Sebastian, having gone round most bars by the time they headed back to camp (not sure how they got back to be honest).

Pamplona Thursday 7th July (9pm till 10am – Yes... all night!!)

The week ended on a massive high, as the majority of Alpine Surfers took the trip to Pamplona to experience the famous Running of the Bull’s festival. Everyone dressed up in white and we spent the night drinking litres of sangria and taking part in the festival. Once we had arrived, there was the best firework display ever, followed by a band which got the party going. We then moved on to the bars and clubs enjoying even more sangria before we made it back to the Stadium at 6am. At 8am the bulls were released into the pen and the running of the bulls commenced. It was an amazing experience, and well worth going to. For those who didn’t go, definitely should next year! Once we got back to Zarautz, we chilled out before we had to say goodbye and head back to dreary England.

Of course, the week didn’t go by without any banter and mischief from the group. However what happened in Spain stays in Spain...

Thank you to everyone who came and made the week amazing. We also thank the legendary coach drivers Craig and Gregg for being very tolerant of us!

If you missed out this year, make sure you book early for next year’s trip. It’s definitely not to be missed! (Next year’s details are TBC)
